Then there's the unmatched convenience of the ISS-G3 remote control. All functions are easily operated in the palm of your hand, not while twisting your neck in the glare of lights while trying to adjust a conventional shutter.
The ISS control unit has a conveniently large, main aperture dial which gives greater freedom in exposure setting and bracketing. The increments obtained with the main dial can be selected by a sub-dial. There are six possible steps : 1 aperture stop, 1/2, 1/3/, 1/4, 1/6 and 1/10. Variations of 1/6 of a stop are often used to slightly influence the color in transparencies. Also, today's exposure meters indicate mostly in 1/10 increments, so the aperture can be set to precisely the metered value.
Pressing a button on the control unit is all it takes to control shutter and aperture status: RELEASE, STOP DOWN, CLOSE, etc. There's no longer any need to fidget with the front of the camera every time an adjustment has to be made, because all these controls are operable from the control unit. So you can concentrate on the composition arrangement, focus and field depth adjustment.
Two serial interfaces are incorporated as standard (mini DIN 8P connector). Aperture and shutter may be controlled from the keyboard of a computer through the software supplied with digital camera backs. Power supply voltage has been increased to 24 V from the previous 12 V. This 24 V power can be obtained from an AC adapter. By connecting an optional connecting cable to Serial 2 port of the ISS-G3, Phase One camera backs can be automatically activated thus perfect one-shot operation may be obtained. |

The display, an easy-to read LCD with back lighting, shows all the information the photographer needs to know: selected shutter speed, aperture(incl. fine adjustments such as "5/6" of a step), shutter status (CLOSED, OPEN, etc.) and messages such as "OUT OF RANGE." During exposure, the display counts up in increments of seconds and minutes. Red, amber and green LEDs indicate the system's current status just like a traffic signal would.
Two shutter/aperture settings can be stored in the memory. When recalled by either of the two memory buttons, the recalled setting takes effect automatically. This feature's usefulness becomes obvious when you consider a situation like this : you are shooting a product which has a number of lighted LEDs, such as a piece of audio equipment. You shoot the main body with your flash, but then you need a second, longer exposure to bring out the LEDs. With the ISS memory, you can switch from one setting to the other instantaneously. The stored settings stay in memory even when the power is turned off.
On the control unit, the shutter speed for exposures up to 32 sec can be selected either increments of 1 time value (TV) or, with the Function key depressed, in fine steps of 1/3 TV. This permits extremely fine variations of exposure without changing the aperture (depth of field), for instance in order to shoot several security shots with slightly different exposure when using continuous lighting. With these time value adjustments, exposure times between 1 and 2 sec such as 1.26 or 1.59 sec can be selected, which would not be possible with a stopwatch. for long exposures over 1 sec, there are two keys which increment the speeds by 1 and 10 seconds, respectively. By using the Function key, increments become 1 and 10 minutes. from one setting to the other instantaneously. The stored settings stay in memory even when the power is turned off. The fastest shutter speed is 1/125 sec in case of #0 and #1 shutters. |
